It is very much reminiscent of the confusion of HAL, as explained in Arthur's novel if not in Stanley Kubrick's film.  The 1968 film is visually quite stunning,  but it lacks the depth of the novel, because of the treatment of the fourth and final section, Jupiter and beyond in the film, but Saturn and its moons in the novel.  Incidentally in part 3, the men go off to see the Monolith to Ligeti's Lux Aeterna theme, sung by a space age heavenly choir..
